Holi 2013: A Festival of Colour

Every year, thousands participate in the festival Holi to celebrate the beginning of spring.

Holi was originally a festival that celebrated fertile land and a good harvest. It is a time to enjoy spring's abundant colors and to say farewell to winter.

The main day, Holi, also known as Dhuli in Sanskrit, or Dhulheti, Dhulandi or Dhulendi, is commemorated by people showering each other in scented powder.

In the light of the Holi celebrations in India, we have become particularly excited about our upcoming textbook publication, The Modern Anthropology of India by Peter Berger and Frank Heidemann.

This accessible textbook provides a critical overview of the ethnographic work done in India since 1947 and assesses the history of research in each region, thus serving as a practical and comprehensive guide to the main themes dealed with by ethnographers. It highlights key analytical concepts and paradigms that came to be of relevance in particular regions in the recent history of research in India, and which possibly gained a pan-Indian or even trans-Indian significance.
