Sivanes Phillipson
I am a senior lecturer who teaches in child development and learning at the Faculty of Education, Monash University. My research explores families systems around children's self concept and academic achievement, in particular the power of parental expectations on children's success in different cultural contexts. I am the Routledge Book Series Editor for the Evolving Families series and have two other books, Constructing Educational Achievement and Developing Leadership in the Asia Pacific.

Biography
Of mixed Indian-Chinese parentage, I have seen how my parents embraced the best of their worlds to bring up their seven children. This has always inspired me to look at how families can shape their children's success and future, just the way my parents had. Having worked in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, I have diverse international experience and knowledge base in the broad field of systems approach to education. I have been awarded multiple research grants locally and internationally, and has numerous doctorate students that come from all over Asia-Pacific and Europe including Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Netherlands. I have published widely in books, peer reviewed journals and book chapters. My 2013 book, titled “Constructing Educational Achievement: A sociocultural perspective” is published by Routledge and focuses on the sociocultural processes underlying educational achievement in multiple contexts globally. My 2014 book targets development of leadership in the Asia Pacific amongst teachers and students of exceptional potential. In 2014, I received the Faculty of Education Dean Citation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning, and most recently, the Monash University Vice Chancellor’s Education Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.
