'Theatrical Unrest' Published March 8

By: Sean McEvoy

My new book, Theatrical Unrest: Ten Riots in the History of the Stage, 1601-2004 came out In March 2016.

I gave a paper on the book at Essex University in February.

In the autumn I will be doing a pre-play talk at the National Theatre, London, on the riot that took place when Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars was first produced in 1926.

Forthcoming Books

By: Sean McEvoy
Subjects: Literature

I am currently working on two books for Routledge. Theatrical Unrest is about ten incidents in the history of theatre which have been the grounds for violence and mayhem. I start with the performance of Shakespeare's Richard II which was commissioned at the time of the Essex revolt in 1601 and end with the trouble in Birmingham which stopped the run of Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti's Behzti in 2004. This book should be out in 2016.

There's also another book I am doing for the Basics series, this time on tragedy. This covers important tragic drama from Aeschylus to Caryl Churchill and introduces a range of key theorists and their ideas. I am hoping this book will prove really useful to students. It should be out in 2017.

I was very pleased to be asked the entry on Ben Jonson for the Cambridge World Shakespeare Encyclopedia. This should be out soon, I think.
