John Irwin, Author of the Month, February 2010
Routledge remembers John Irwin, Criminologist, beloved professor, Advocate for Prison Reform, and Routledge author, who died this month at the age of 80.
Irwin, author of Lifers: Seeking Redemption in Prison (as well as five other books) lived a life that proves it is possible to change for the better. A former inmate at Soledad Prison in California, Irwin remade himself, morphing from criminal to criminologist. After serving a five year sentence for armed robbery, Irwin went on to graduate college and earn a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.
