Links
A range of key Website links organised under the 8 sections of Museum Basics.
This page lists a number of websites which may be useful for smaller museums with limited resources. Vast quantities of information and advice are now available on the web – so much so that it is difficult to find one's way around (see Museum Basics Unit 109).
Have you found any websites that might be useful for colleagues in other museums? Please send the links to museumbasics@gmail.com and we will add them here. We would especially welcome sites based in Asia, Africa and Australasia.
The following links are presented as recommendations. All information on these websites are the responsibility of their administrator and may change over time. If you find any broken links or websites with inaccurate information, please let us know.
Section 1 - Introductory
Virtual Library Museum Pages
http://archives.icom.museum/vlmp
A brave and idiosyncratic effort to list all the museums in the world which have an online presence. Inevitably there are huge numbers of museums which do not appear – for example, almost all the museums in Africa!
Section 2 - The museum and its users
Leicester University School of Museum Studies
http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/museumstudies/rcmg
This site includes a rich variety of the School's recent projects and publications. It offers many ideas on engaging people who do not regularly visit museums.

http://name-aam.org/home
This US Association offers many of the back copies of its magazine Exhibitionist here.
Subject Specialist Networks
http://www.mla.gov.uk/what/programmes/renaissance/ssns

Social History Curators Group (SHCG)
http://www.shcg.org.uk
This UK-based site offers a wide range of training materials and other resources for history curators, including the ambitious 'FirstBASE' facility. (Crispin Paine, co-author of Museum Basics, is proud to have been SHCG's first Chair).

http://astc.org/index.htm
This site’s 'resource center' offers lots of advice on developing interactive interpretation of science and technology.
Art History Resources
http://arthistoryresources.net/
A personal but very comprehensive and imaginative gateway to hundreds of websites of use to art historians throughout the world, including free images, museum sites, essays and notes of many different sorts.
Museums Association 'Find a Supplier'
http://www.museumsassociation.org/suppliers/find-a-supplier
The UK Museums Association's website includes a list of suppliers, who can in turn often provide invaluable information on museum equipment and materials.
Section 4 - Collecting and Collections
Collections Link
http://www.collectionslink.org.uk
A large site containing a very rich variety of resources for all aspects of the care and management of collections. Particularly valuable is the 'browse by subject' tab, which allows the user to find (for example) advice on caring for plastics. At first sight this site may seem particularly focused on the UK, but many of its resources are relevant to museums throughout the world.
International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM)
http://www.iccrom.org/index.shtml
ICCROM is an intergovernmental organization (IGO) dedicated to the conservation of cultural heritage. Its website is valuable for its emphasis on all sorts of 'cultural heritage', from historic buildings to museum collections, in many different countries. It gives good attention to the needs in Africa and Asia. Note the training programme and unusual publications list.
Museums Association – Collections
http://www.museumsassociation.org/collections/monument-resources
The web contains all sorts of valuable information in many different corners. This site, for example, offers advice on interpreting marks (patent numbers etc.) on manufactured artefacts, and on dating historic photographs, amongst other things.
Section 5 - Managing and Caring for Collections
The Getty
http://www.getty.edu/
The Getty Research Institute has much useful material here (see especially 'Search tools and databases'), as does the Getty Conservation Institute. The site describes recent high-quality international projects, and focuses on built and buried heritage as well as on museums.
The Institute of Conservation (ICON)
http://www.icon.org.uk/index.php
ICON's website is a rich resource for museums as well as for conservators. Particularly valuable is the Chantry Library ‘Web Resources’ page, which offers links to many useful websites, and the ‘How to care for...’ page.
Heritage Preservation: the National Institute for Conservation
http://www.heritagepreservation.org
This US site has a good number of free publications to download. Strong on disaster preparation and response.
Australian Government
http://www.environment.gov.au/heritage/publications/significance2-0/index.html
The groundbreaking publication Significance 2.0: a Guide to Assessing the Significance of Collections is now available here.
University College London (UCL)

Section 7 - The museum and its management
Smithsonian: Museum Studies
http://museumstudies.si.edu
Some valuable resources for people planning museum training: reading lists, lists of museum organisations, links to curricula, etc. Particularly focused on the USA.
International Committee for the Training of Personnel (ICTOP)
http://www.ictop.org
ICOM's training committee website is assembling materials relating to the development of training programmes.

Its Small Museums pages have some useful resources.
Section 8 - Supporting resources
International Council of Museums (ICOM)

Photographs
A developing resource drawn from museums worldwide.

Any photographs selected will be fully acknowledged and referenced to the relevant unit(s) in the text.
We invite you to send your photographs electronically to: museumbasics@gmail.com. This gallery will then be updated periodically with your images.
Bibliography
A range of key published sources organised under the 8 sections of Museum Basics.
There is an increasingly wide range of publications available about different aspects of the theory and practice of museum work. The books here represent a good selection from which a small to medium-sized museum may choose a number of key texts to develop a working library. They are all in the English language and are listed with their ISBN numbers for reference purposes. The list has been arranged in sections to reflect the structure of Museum Basics, although in a number of cases you will find that books cover more than one area of interest. The list does not include the wide range of journals relevant to museum work which should also be considered in building a museum library. Discussion of other sources of information for the museum can be found in Units 108–109.
