In Planning and Place in the City, Marichela Sepe explores the preservation, reconstruction and enhancement of cultural heritage and place identity. She outlines the history of the concept of placemaking, and sets out the range of different methods of analysis and assessment that are used to help pin down the nature of place identity. This book also uses the author's own survey-based method called PlaceMaker to detect elements that do not feature in traditional mapping and identifies appropriate planning interventions.

Lucy Bullivant analyses the ideals and processes of international masterplans, and their role in the evolution of many different types of urban contexts in both the developed and developing world. This is a key book for those interested in today’s multiscalar masterplanning and conceptually advanced methodologies and principles being applied to meet the challenges and opportunities of the urbanizing world.

In the past, spatial masterplans for cities have been fixed blueprints realized as physical form through conventional top down processes. These frequently disregarded existing social and cultural structures, while the old modernist planning model zoned space for home and work. At a time of urban growth, these models are now being replaced by more adaptable, mixed use plans dealing holistically with the physical, social and economic revival of districts, cities and regions. Through today’s public participative approaches and using technologically enabled tools, contemporary masterplanning instruments embody fresh principles, giving cities a greater resilience and capacity for social integration and change in the future.

Lucy Bullivant analyses the ideals and processes of international masterplans, and their role in the evolution of many different types of urban contexts in both the developed and developing world. Among the book’s key themes are landscape-driven schemes, social equity through the reevaluation of spatial planning, and the evolution of strategies responding to a range of ecological issues and the demands of social growth.

Drawing on first-hand accounts and illustrated throughout with colour photographs, plans and visualizations, the book includes twenty essays introduced by an extensive overview of the field and its objectives. These investigate plans including one-north Singapore, Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, Xochimilco in Mexico City and Waterfront Seattle, illuminating their distinct yet complementary integrated strategies. This is a key book for those interested in today’s multiscalar masterplanning and conceptually advanced methodologies and principles being applied to meet the challenges and opportunities of the urbanizing world.

The author's research was enabled by grants from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), the SfA (the Netherlands Architecture Fund), the Danish Embassy and support from the Alfred Herrhausen Society.
Authors of Dynamic Landscape are part of the design team for the Olympic 2012 Park Gardens

Professors James Hitchmough and Nigel Dunnett of the Department of Landscape, University of Sheffield were appointed in 2008 as principal horticultural and planting design consultants for the Olympic Park, working with LDA/Hargreaves.

The 2012 gardens in the London Olympic Park are a spectacular celebration of contemporary horticulture and planting design, comprising half a mile of naturalistic perennial plantings. While the main focus in the Olympic Park as a whole is on native biodiversity and ecological approaches, the 2012 gardens explore the horticultural diversity of British gardens and take visitors on a tour of the biodiversity hotspots of the world that have been the major source of plants for UK gardeners over the past 600 years.

	Planning Olympic Legacies
Transport Dreams and Urban Realities
By Eva Kassens-Noor
When a city wins the right to hold the Olympics, one of the oft cited advantages to the region is the catalytic effect upon the urban and transport projects of the host cities. However, with unparalleled access to documents and records, Eva Kassens-Noor questions and challenges this fundamental assertion of host cities who claim to have used the Olympic Games as a way to move forward their urban agendas
Taking time out of their busy schedules Stephen Ankers, David Kaiserman and Chris Shepley answer some in depth questions about their new book Grotton Revisted ( published in conjunction with the RTPI)

	Quotes

"Loved it , I almost had to be resuscitated" - Professor Sir Peter Hall, Bartlett Professor of Planning and Regeneration, University College London, UK

"It is an extremely funny book, but close enough to the reality of planning practice to be unsettling. It will certainly make you laugh, but it will be a rather nervous sort of laughter." – Australian Planner

	1. What would be the key piece of advice you would give to someone who has just qualified as a planner?

CS: Don't bother to learn the rules. They'll change in a minute.

DK: The problem with planners is they can always see the other person's point of view. The problem with other people is that they can't.

SA: Think very carefully. Should you consider retraining?

2. What was the main change you noticed when you revisited Grotton?

CS: The publication of that Draft Action Area Plan for Lower Upton on t' Bogg has REALLY made a difference.

SA: I see they've banned that right turn at the bottom of Sludge Street. And none too soon, if you ask me.

DK: The Co-op now seems to sell something called "focaccia". Is it a floor cleaner?

3. What has been the greatest achievement of Grotton County Council in the last 31 years?

SA: The speed, robustness and flexibility of the "No comments" response to the Secretary of State's proposed changes to to the Regional Spatial Strategy.

CS: Staying alive.

DK: To avoid being run by a Tory Lib-Dem coalition.

4. Who has inspired you and why?

DK: Mrs Satterthwaite, my late form teacher at junior school. "Leave Melanie alone" she used to say. Wise words indeed, given where Melanie ended up. Do you want me to go on?

CS: Professor Audrey Grumpie of the Polytechnic of Central Grotton, all of whose lectures I missed.

SA: Lady Gaga, for her holistic and existential approach to the reorientation of resource prioritisation and modal shift. That, and the nice frocks.

5. Tell us one unknown fact about yourself

DK: I'm a recovering stamp collector. Honestly.

SA: I sat next to Ryan Sidebottom at an outdoor fish fry in Barbados during the World Twenty20 Cricket. I believe he still talks about it.

CS: I once represented Essex at lacrosse.

Has the market really become the sole factor that influences the treatment of public space? Have the financial and personal interests of the few really come to dominate those of the many?

To answer these questions Matthew Carmona and Filipa Wunderlich have carried out a detailed investigation of the modern public spaces of London, that most global of cities. For more information about the book click here
