Econometrics, ‘a unification of the theoretical-quantitative approach to economic problems’ (Ragnar Frisch), can be regarded as the most significant 20th century innovation in economics. Econometrics took shape mainly during the 1930s and 1940s and became a matured sub-discipline of economics in the subsequent three to four decades.

This present collection from Routledge is a fine-tuned assemblage of joint explorations and inventions from distinguished scholars over a span of eighty years. The collection is organised into four volumes in historical sequence. The first volume covers the very early period before econometrics became formalised, which forms the theme of the second volume. The subsequent expansion of econometric research is illustrated in the third volume, while the final volume documents major endeavours to reform and reshape econometrics since the 1970s.

The four volumes are selected to complement the relevant existing literature, such as econometrics textbooks, various handbooks of econometrics, as well as special topic collections. In particular, the selection aims at benefiting three groups of readers – students, applied economists and historians of economic and econometric thought – by filling in two major gaps in econometrics textbooks: lack of discussion on methodological issues and lack of full presentations of applied cases other than short illustrations of taught techniques.

Moreover, this Routledge collection provides readers not only with an extensive introduction of all the selected works, but also with several items which have not been published before – the lecture notes prepared by Ragnar Frisch for the Nordic Economic Meeting in Stockholm in 1931 and Jacques Drèze’s seminal paper on Bayesian econometrics, which was circulated as a working paper in 1962. This is also the first time that English translations are made available of excerpts of Oskar Morgenstern’s 1928 book in German on economic forecasting and Trygve Haavelmo’s presentation in Norwegian for the 3rd Scandinavian Meeting for young social economists at Copenhagen in 1939.

The consequences of suicide are far-reaching, having considerable social, economic, and emotional impact across the globe. General facts on suicide are now widely known. For instance, suicide is usually a young male act and is strongly linked with those suffering from mental disorders. Certain groups are also considered to be at a greater risk – alcoholics, migrants, the bereaved and prisoners.

Research and investigation into the causes of suicide has greatly increased in recent years. However, much of this research is highly specialized, meaning that it is difficult to obtain an understandable overview. Keith Hawton

Professor Keith Hawton is a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Also a Professor of Psychiatry at Oxford University, Hawton has over 35 years of work and research in the field, publishing a wealth of material on suicide and self harm throughout this time, as well as leading research into the prevention and treatment of suicide. This year, Professor Hawton received an award for lifetime achievement and outstanding contribution in research, treatment and teaching in the field of suicidology and suicide prevention.

Rory O’Connor

Rory O’Connor works as a Professor at the University of Stirling, as well as being an honorary Professor for the School of Psychology at the University of Nottingham. Professor O’Connor leads the Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory at the University of Stirling, which is the leading suicide and self harm group in Scotland with a reputation for producing high quality and innovative research.

During this three hundred year period, it was a popular pastime for gentlemen to travel for weeks or even months around Britain, discovering their own country. The book describes both the pleasures and the hardships that these tourists endured. The book provides an account of the changing English landscape, the ever changing economy and the change in the concerns of these tourists throughout the period.

About the author:

Esther Moir read History at Cambridge before going to Leicester as the first research student in the newly established Department of English Local History, where she worked with W.G. Hoskins and H.P.R. Finberg.

Moir then returned to Newnham College as a Research Fellow, which allowed her access to valuable material in the University Library and the opportunity to travel further afield in search of unpublished material.

The book, however, had nothing to do with her PhD thesis or academic teaching. Instead it was the fruits of an enthusiasm that was well in advance of its time. Landscape study then scarcely existed; Moir was, in other words, a pioneer in a field that now claims great interest.

E. Cashmore

A professor of Culture, Media and Sport at Staffordshire University’s School of Health, E. Cashmore previously worked as a Professor of Sociology at the University of Tampa, Florida, as well as a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. Cashmore studied for his degree in Sociology at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic. After completing his masters at the University of Toronto, he returned to England and began work on his PhD thesis on the rastafari movement in England in the late 1970s. This became the subject for his first published work, Rastaman, which is just one of the titles to be reissued by Routledge Revivals.

What is the Strategic Survey?

The annual review of world affairs from the IISS, the Strategic Survey provides essential analysis of the year’s key events for government policy makers, journalists, business leaders and academics. Described by Editor Alexander Nicoll as ‘the first draft of history’ (read the full blog post here) the Survey takes an overview of the events of the preceding twelve months to answer some key questions.
