Out now: The Rise of Econometrics

This January, Routledge Major Works published the new collection, The Rise of Econometrics. A new release from Routledge's Critical Concepts in Economics series, The Rise of Econometrics brings together the best and most influential scholarship on the rise of econometrics. Continue reading for an insight into the text from the collection’s editor...

Econometrics, ‘a unification of the theoretical-quantitative approach to economic problems’ (Ragnar Frisch), can be regarded as the most significant 20th century innovation in economics. Econometrics took shape mainly during the 1930s and 1940s and became a matured sub-discipline of economics in the subsequent three to four decades.

This present collection from Routledge is a fine-tuned assemblage of joint explorations and inventions from distinguished scholars over a span of eighty years. The collection is organised into four volumes in historical sequence. The first volume covers the very early period before econometrics became formalised, which forms the theme of the second volume. The subsequent expansion of econometric research is illustrated in the third volume, while the final volume documents major endeavours to reform and reshape econometrics since the 1970s.

The four volumes are selected to complement the relevant existing literature, such as econometrics textbooks, various handbooks of econometrics, as well as special topic collections. In particular, the selection aims at benefiting three groups of readers – students, applied economists and historians of economic and econometric thought – by filling in two major gaps in econometrics textbooks: lack of discussion on methodological issues and lack of full presentations of applied cases other than short illustrations of taught techniques.

Moreover, this Routledge collection provides readers not only with an extensive introduction of all the selected works, but also with several items which have not been published before – the lecture notes prepared by Ragnar Frisch for the Nordic Economic Meeting in Stockholm in 1931 and Jacques Drèze’s seminal paper on Bayesian econometrics, which was circulated as a working paper in 1962. This is also the first time that English translations are made available of excerpts of Oskar Morgenstern’s 1928 book in German on economic forecasting and Trygve Haavelmo’s presentation in Norwegian for the 3rd Scandinavian Meeting for young social economists at Copenhagen in 1939.

Published this November – a new collection from leading academics in suicide research

This November saw the publication of a new title in the Major Themes in Health and Social Welfare series. Edited by two of the world’s leading authorities, the collection brings together cutting-edge research on the increasingly major issue in the public health sector.

The consequences of suicide are far-reaching, having considerable social, economic, and emotional impact across the globe. General facts on suicide are now widely known. For instance, suicide is usually a young male act and is strongly linked with those suffering from mental disorders. Certain groups are also considered to be at a greater risk – alcoholics, migrants, the bereaved and prisoners.

Research and investigation into the causes of suicide has greatly increased in recent years. However, much of this research is highly specialized, meaning that it is difficult to obtain an understandable overview. To help make sense in the high output of research, this text brings together authoritative reference materials from across a broad field of study and research.

The collection is edited by two leading researchers in this area – Keith Hawton and Rory O’Connor. Both Hawton and O’Connor have built strong reputations in the field for their pioneering work research and methods.

	Abouth the Editors:

	Keith Hawton

Professor Keith Hawton is a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Also a Professor of Psychiatry at Oxford University, Hawton has over 35 years of work and research in the field, publishing a wealth of material on suicide and self harm throughout this time, as well as leading research into the prevention and treatment of suicide. This year, Professor Hawton received an award for lifetime achievement and outstanding contribution in research, treatment and teaching in the field of suicidology and suicide prevention.

	Rory O’Connor

Rory O’Connor works as a Professor at the University of Stirling, as well as being an honorary Professor for the School of Psychology at the University of Nottingham. Professor O’Connor leads the Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory at the University of Stirling, which is the leading suicide and self harm group in Scotland with a reputation for producing high quality and innovative research.

Editor Taka Kaneko provides an insight into commissioning Routledge/Edition Synapse Major Works

Taka Kaneko, Japanese-based editor of the Edition Synapse/Routledge co-publication programme provides an insight into the history of, and process of commissioning for, this popular publishing programme.

Can you give us a brief history of Edition Synapse and how the publisher came to work with Routledge?
Our relationship with Routledge started back in the 1980’s when one of the founders of the company was based in London as a representative of a Japanese book importer. He worked closely with academic publishers such as Croom Helm, Thoemmes Press, which later merged with Routledge. During this period the Japanese academic market grew quickly, the result of the increase in new universities and academic libraries. Many of these libraries eagerly sought key scholarly materials to build their research collections, and acquired rare and antiquarian books from the western book market. The supply of original materials could not be constantly guaranteed however, and as a result we developed a programme to offer the market reprint packages of key books in facsimile format. This was the first phase of our cooperation. Edition Synapse was created 15 years ago in order for us to further develop the project, and to co-publish Major Works in various areas of the humanities.

Can you give us an insight into how you go about commissioning new publications for the programme?
Primarily our new products are generated by meeting with scholars. We attend academic conferences as often as possible where we have a booth to display our publications. As most of them take place on Saturdays and Sundays, there are no weekends in our calendar! We target new, niche topics and make attempts to contact scholars who conduct research with a thorough study of primary source materials. Academics who purchase antiquarian books for their university libraries are often our key clients, both in terms of sales and in developing products. We meet regularly with them for drinks, and quite a few of the ideas for new publications come up with the help of some Sake!

Which subjects are most popular with your customers, and why do you think British literature and cultural history has such appeal in an Asian market?
The modernization of Japan began in the mid-19th century with our encounter of western civilization. Scholarship in Japan was established by importing western systems of education and research. People may be surprized to know that the very first professor of Japanese linguistics at the University of Tokyo was a British scholar, and the first book on Japanese history of art was written in English. This is the case with various forms of Japanese culture; we are not able to talk about modern Japanese literature or theatre without touching on the influences they received from the West. The popularity of British or/and European subjects amongst today’s students is as strong as it used to be.

Edition Synapse Major Works titles aren’t available in eBook format due to Rights restrictions. Does this affect their uptake in an Asian market?
We are not particularly keen to enter into eBooks or eDatabase markets as it is our belief that providing primary source material in hard copy has value on its own. The serendipitous discovery of information often leads scholars to new areas of research and this happens more often in front of bookshelves than liquid crystal screens. Technically, too, many of our products include plates in colour and some in a large folio size which cannot be easily adapted in a standardized format of e-products.

Can you talk a little about the key Edition Synapse/Routledge co-pubs that are releasing this year?
The key title on our list is a series of reprints of The Japan Weekly Mail, which was the leading English newspaper published in Yokohama throughout the Meiji era. Yokohama Archives of History, with whom we publish the series, spent nearly ten years collecting the original issues which were published between 1871 to 1917. Every year we release a volume covering 3 to 5 years of issues. This autumn we publish the 8th volume, covering the years 1904 to 1906, which covers possibly the most interesting years of Anglo-Japanese history, when Japan fought against Russia along with the British. Women and Belief, 1852-1928, African American Writing, and Children and Empire also publish this autumn, and are three particularly interesting titles.

Asian American Literature, May’s ‘Book of the Month’, is a four-volume collection co-published by Routledge and Edition Synapse.

American writers whose provenance lies in Asia have been producing and publishing work of interest and distinction for well over a century. However, in recent decades there has been an exponential growth in their output, and much Asian American literature has now achieved new levels of both popular success and critical acclaim. The burgeoning number of literary anthologies and academic studies attests to a growing and deepening scholarly attention. Indeed, Asian American literature—and the serious critical work it has spawned—is now central to debates about national cultures, world civilizations, and transnational imaginations.

Asian American Literature answers the urgent need for an authoritative reference work to map the vast critical terrain of research on and around Asian American literature.

The first volume (‘Literary History: Criticism and Theory’) brings together the best work to define, explicitly or implicitly, the parameters of Asian American literature. It addresses its political and aesthetic significance and major issues of contention. Volume II (‘Prose: Fiction and Non-Fiction’) brings together the best interpretive work and practical criticism on key works of Asian American literature, both fictive and factual. Volume III (‘Poetry’) assembles the essential scholarship on Asian American poetry, while the final volume in the collection (‘Drama and Performance’) collects the vital research on theatrical texts and performance pieces.

Asian American Literature is fully indexed and includes a comprehensive new introduction by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. An indispensable reference collection, it will enable users to make sense of the rapidly growing, and ever more complex corpus of scholarly literature which explores—among many others—dizzying questions about racial diversity and identity, cultural history, and literary value. An indispensable reference collection, it is destined to be valued by scholars and students as a vital one-stop research and pedagogic resource.

Asian American Literature is now available to order online.
Part of Routledge Reference’s Critical Concepts in Law series, part of the Major Works programme, Law and Development is a four-volume collection which brings together resources which trace the evolution of the Law and Development movement.

Law and Development, as a scholarly discipline, emerged in the United States in the 1960s; the result of the belief of some American legal academics about the possibility of achieving democratic change in developing countries through legal means.

Financial assistance from the US government, as well as US-based foundations enabled the launch of scores of ambitious research projects and the rapid growth of legal education programmes in the newly independent states of Asia and Africa, as well as in several countries in Latin America.

By the late 1960s and early 1970s, as the number of academic lawyers with direct knowledge of developing countries grew, the Law and Development movement was recognized as an important new trend in American legal education.

Despite a loss of momentum in the 1970s, as some leading figures came to realize that American liberal legalism could not easily be replicated in developing countries, Law and Development now occupies a prominent place on the agenda of all major international and national development agencies. It has also been firmly embraced by most developing countries, as they adapt their institutions and procedures to the demands generated by the process of globalization.

Today is International Women's Day. This global event celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

Annually, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, and government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and more.

In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday. You may ask why? Well suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote.

International Women's Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911. 2011 was the Global Centenary Year.

Throughout 2012 Routledge Reference will publish a wide variety of multivolume collections in and around the world of feminism. Under our major works programme our History of Feminism series makes key archival source material readily available to scholars, researchers, and students of women’s and gender studies, women’s history, and women’s writing.

Each 4-6 volume set is introduced by an expert editor, which provides users with easy access to material that is often not widely available, is inaccessible, or is scattered throughout a variety of specialist journals and books.

Past collections have included works on female journalists, travel writing, cross-dressing, suffrage and Nineteenth-Century Education. Forthcoming highlights include Women and Belief, 1852–1928 a six-volume collection of primary materials covering a wide range of opinions about women, their self-identity, and the combination of their spiritual and political beliefs.

Building on the success of Women and Empire (2009), in July the series will publish a new title by author Cheryl Cassidy which brings together in four volumes a unique range of nineteenth-century texts on children and empire.

In the history of economics, women writers were all but invisible until a few decades ago. This year we will publish Women’s Economic Thought in the Eighteenth Century a 3 volume collection which will remedy this omission.

Finally our Routledge Library Editions series will reissue three collections over the course of 2012:

	• Feminism
• Women's History
• Women, Feminism and Literature.

Topics cover all aspects of women's literature, gender and feminism through literary criticism and the work of women literary theorists.

Each 'Mini-library’ will include titles by various authors, offering the purchaser the chance to buy a title individually, as thematically structured mini-sets, or as a complete set both in print and online.

Language Evolution, February’s ‘Book of the Month’, is a four-volume collection from of Routledge’s Critical Concepts in Linguistics series. The text provides an overview of the intensive debate on language evolution following the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species.

Assembling the most important scholarly research concerning the biological evolution of language, Language Evolution includes excerpts from ancient sources such as the Bible, Plato, and Aristotle, along with classical sources like Condillac, Rousseau, and Herder.

The text outlines each of the major conceptions of protolanguage and examines the evolution of our human capacity for speech, as well as focusing on the modern (mostly post-1990) literature attempting to reconcile the Chomskyean approach to linguistics with a Darwinian evolutionary viewpoint. It also incorporates the new insights and approaches based on computer modelling, which have played a growing role in the recent literature.

Providing unified and ready access to a selection of the most important papers from the 1990s onward, this is an important resource for those scholars interested in possessing a deeper, historically informed overview of the immense literature on this topic.

Over recent years, research into religious belief during the Victorian period and the early twentieth century has grown in diversity and importance. The centrality of faith-based discourses to women of the period has long been recognized by scholars in the field, but until now relatively little significance has been attached to the fundamental relationship between women’s faith and women’s rights.

Women and Belief, 1852–1928 - a new six-Volume collection forming part of the History of Feminism series - remedies this omission, exploring a wide range of opinions about women, their self-identity, and the combination of their spiritual and political beliefs.

Addressing the most debated aspects of women’s religious, social, cultural, and political rights, Women and Belief, 1852–1928, adopts an historical overview of the period and provides an authoritative representation of the wide body of literature written by and about women’s faith. Beginning with an example of how religious discourse provided a model for acceptable female behaviour and a satirical take on women’s rights and spiritualism and ending with an economist’s psychoanalytic study of female belief from 1928, the collection provides a unique collection of different viewpoints.

Bringing together the work of women writers, theologians, philosophers, and economic and cultural historians the collection illustrates the multiplicity of voices and opinions on the issues of suffrage and religious faith. This diversity is equally reflected in the broad geographical coverage of the collection which draws on works from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and India; and moves beyond the Christian into the spheres of theosophy, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. The gathered materials include works of non-fiction, poetry, analytical works, satires, pamphlets, sermons, spiritual (auto)biography, and periodical articles, which chart the gradual evolution of feminist thinking about belief, spirituality, and faith that directly fed into the emerging discourses of political and social rights for women.

Co-published by Routledge and Edition Synapse. An authoritative collection of Asian Shakespeare’s has been long and eagerly awaited by many scholars and critics. This five-volume collection answers that need.

It provides the first substantial and essential resource of Shakespearean adaptations in East Asia for scholars and critics, as well as graduate students interested in investigating Shakespearean re-creations in the region.

Along with the volume introductions, each adaptation is also prefaced by a succinct introduction with full consideration given to overview, performance history, and analysis.

The collection will be a definitive entry point for all students and researchers interested in Asian theatres as well as Shakespeare’s in Asia.
