Between Cultural Imperialism and Cultural Globalization
By Tanner Mirrlees

A critical cultural materialist introduction to the study of global entertainment media.

In Global Entertainment Media, Tanner Mirrlees undertakes an analysis of the ownership, production, distribution, marketing, exhibition and consumption of global films and television shows, with an eye to political economy and cultural studies.

	Among other topics, Mirrlees examines:

	• Paradigms of global entertainment media such as cultural imperialism and cultural globalization.

	• The business of entertainment media: the structure of capitalist culture/creative industries (financers, producers, distributors and exhibitors) and trends in the global political economy of entertainment media.

	• The "governance" of global entertainment media: state and inter-state media and cultural policies and regulations that govern the production, distribution and exhibition of entertainment media and enable or impede its cross-border flow.

	• The new international division of cultural labor (NICL): the cross-border production of entertainment by cultural workers in asymmetrically interdependent media capitals, and economic and cultural concerns surrounding runaway productions and co-productions.

	• The economic motivations and textual design features of globally popular entertainment forms such as blockbuster event films, TV formats, glocalized lifestyle brands and synergistic media.

	• The cross-cultural reception and effects of TV shows and films.

	• The World Wide Web, digitization and convergence culture.

Edited by Kim Bissell, Stephen Perry

When the general public follow the Olympic Games on television, on the internet, even in the newspapers, they feel like they have themselves experienced the performances of the athletes. This book explores whether it is ever possible to experience the Olympic Games as an athletic event without considering the effect of the media.

This book addresses a multitude of ways in which the intermediary of media production alters the experience of the Olympics.

Spectators watching Olympic events from the stands are less subjected to the language of the commentators, journalists, and even the athlete interviews as they form impressions and understandings of the games. However, even those who sit in the stands for the opening ceremonies or walk down the streets of the Olympic Village and the host city are treated to media spectacles that are intentionally produced to display the attitudes, values, and beliefs of the host country and its Olympic Committee. This book performs the important task of analysing ways in which the media serves as both an integral component and an arbiter of the Games for society.

This book was originally published as a special issue of Mass Communication and Society.

Theatre and film frequently require replicas of three-dimensional objects built for actors to use.

We are hosting a contest to celebrate the skill of prop builders everywhere and the release of Eric Hart's new book, The Prop Building Guidebook: For Theatre, Film, and TV!

Enter the contest to win a prize worth $500!

This book lays the groundwork for an artisan to determine what materials and techniques to use to build these props. Walking the reader through the various tools and techniques used in historical and contemporary prop-making, the author presents a process for deciding the materials and methods to build any prop. With an explanation of how the craft and its products have developed over time, the budding artisan will understand not just how and when to use certain techniques or materials, but also why to use them and what advantages they give.

It arms the prop maker with a structured procedure for approaching the construction of any prop. Illustrated with step-by-step examples of how to use each construction method, and explanations of different types of materials, this book gives the beginner prop artisan a strong foundation to approach the construction of props and answers the question, "How should I begin?"

Listen deeply. Tell stories. This is the mantra of the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS). Over the years, the CDS's work has transformed the way that community activists, educators, health and human services agencies, business professionals, and artists think about story, media, culture, and the power of personal voice in creating change. For those who yearn to tell multimedia stories, Digital Storytelling is the place to begin.

In this revised and updated edition of the CDS's popular guide to digital storytelling, co-founder Joe Lambert details the history and methods of digital storytelling practices. Using a "7 Steps" approach, Lambert helps storytellers identify the fundamentals of dynamic digital storytelling--from seeing the story, assembling it, and sharing it. As in the last edition, readers of the fourth edition will also find new explorations of the applications of digital storytelling and updated appendices that provide resources for budding digital storytellers, including information about past and present CDS-affiliated projects and place-based storytelling, a narrative-based approach to understanding experience and landscape.

A companion website further brings the entire storytelling process to life. On the site you will find some additional resources, including digital stories mentioned in the book, links to relevant resources and technologies, a storyboard template, and software tutorial guides. Find out more and view inside the book.

The Mediatization of Culture and Society

Mediatization has emerged as a key concept to reconsider old, yet fundamental questions about the role and influence of media in culture and society. In particular the theory of mediatization has proved fruitful for the analysis of how media spread to, become intertwined with, and influence other social institutions and cultural phenomena like politics, play and religion.

The Mediatization of Culture and Society presents a major contribution to the theoretical understanding of the mediatization of culture and society. This is supplemented by in-depth studies of:

•The mediatization of politics: From party press to opinion industry
•The mediatization of religion: From the faith of the church to the enchantment of the media
•The mediatization of play: From bricks to bytes
•The mediatization of habitus: The social character of a new individualism.

Mediatization represents a new social condition in which the media have emerged as an important institution in society at the same time as they have become integrated into the very fabric of social and cultural life. Making use of a broad conception of the media as technologies, institutions and aesthetic forms, Stig Hjarvard considers how characteristics of both old and new media come to influence human interaction, social institutions and cultural imaginations. Order your copy here.
Winner of the 2013 Society for Cinema and Media Studies Best Edited Collection Award!

For decades, television scholars have viewed global television through the lens of cultural imperialism, focusing primarily on programs produced by US and UK markets and exported to foreign markets.

Global Television Formats revolutionizes television studies by de-provincializing its approach to media globalization. It re-examines dominant approaches and their legacies of global/local and center/periphery, and offers new directions for understanding television’s contemporary incarnations.

The chapters in this collection take up the format phenomena from around the globe. Contributors address both little known examples and massive global hits ranging from the Idol franchise, to telenovelas, dance competitions, sports programming, reality TV, quiz shows, sitcoms and more.
