The National Literacy Trust
An excellent site containing information on the National Year of Reading, Reading is Fundamental (RIF), special events/conferences taking place this year, NLT publications, national update - government policy and initiatives, literacy organisations, plus a database containing over 2000 summaries of literacy related initiatives and research.

The Reading and Language Information Centre
Contains details about the centre at Reading University, conferences, staff, publications, courses, research undertaken at the university and membership details.

National Centre for Research in Children's Literature
Provides introductory information about the centre and the following: book reviews, web-sites and conferences all related to children’s literature, details of places which offer graduate studies in children’s literature, publications and a list of places which hold collections of children’s literature.

Department for Education and Employment (DfEE)
As well as offering information for those seeking jobs and employers, this site contains information for parents and schools, with a link to information on The National Year of Reading and how this initiative fits in with the government’s drive to raise standards. Virtual Teachers Centre
This useful site offers five different links: Reception - gives an introduction to what the VTC is; Library - contains links to the UK Education Departments and other government-funded bodies, giving access to information ranging from government policy documents through to practical advice on the use of ICT in the classroom; Meeting Room - enables you to exchange ideas and ask questions of others; Classroom Resources - contains a range of web-based materials designed to support teaching and learning across the school curriculum; Professional Development - provides a range of resources and links to support continuing professional development and to help teachers enhance their use of ICT in the school curriculum.

BBC Education - Read and Write Together
This site is really intended for parents who want to play a part in helping their child’s literacy development, but teachers may find it useful to browse through in order to offer advice to parents. Contains sections on reading and writing, offers suggestions for activities which teachers may use in the classroom, and links to other useful sites as well as the BBC main education web-site.

British Educational Communications and Technology Agency
Provides an introduction to BECTA, the projects they are involved in and their latest press releases. Also gives details of resources including CD-ROM reviews and access to several BECTA publications on-line. General information on ICT in education and the National Grid for Learning, and a list of IT support providers also provided.

Basic Skills Agency
This site contains information on how the Agency is involved in projects dealing with the teaching of literacy at primary and secondary level, as well as adult and family literacy. It contains information about various research undertaken - for example boys’ literacy achievements, and gives you the opportunity to subscribe to BT’s CampusWorld which has reading and writing activities. It also provides a link to the Agency’s Resource Centre where you can access a list of the Agency’s publications.

As well as general information about the Institute for students, the IoE website contains information on forthcoming conferences, press releases, research and resources for teaching. It also gives details about the Institute’s teaching centres and units such as the Literacy Assessment and Research Centre and INSET department.

This site has details of all Scholastic's educational books, including teachers' resources and titles specially designed to help you work with the literacy hour. Benjamin Zephaniah
On this website you'll find articles and features by the dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah, and also examples of his poetry (which you can hear him reading if you have Netscape 3.0 with shockwave plug-in and a 28.8 modem or greater - there are clear instructions to follow on how to do this!). Oneworld, which hosts this site, is a global justice organisation - their main site (http://www.oneworld.org) is worth a look round for information on the environment and global development.
