The theatre at Ephesus, located on what is today the western coast of Turkey. The original theatre was probably built in the early third century B.C. E., as a grand feature of the elaborate Hellenistic, harbor city built by the colonizing Greeks. Such extant Greek stone theatres were built long after the richest period of Greek drama. (See Chapter 2.) Today’s remnants of the semi-circular orchestra and skene building behind it reflect alterations during the Roman Empire that were typical. (See Chapter 2.)
