4.1 (generally relevant to ch. 4 & case study on Dôjoji)

Scene from the noh play, Ama, at the Kongo Noh Theatre, Kyoto, 1962. In this play, the Emperor has a memorial service for his dead mother, who performed a heroic task of diving for a sunken treasurer for the previous Emperor, with the result that her son became the next Emperor. The mother’s ghost then appears in the memorial service in the form of a dragon woman and dances. She and the woman/demon who appears in the noh play, Dôjôji, are characteristic of a genre of noh plays. (See Chapter 3) Photo © Gary Jay Williams
