4.2 relevant to chapter 4 and case study on Kabuki and Bunraku

Kabuki actor Ebizo Ichikawa performing the role of Benkei in Kanjincho at the Kabuki Theatre, Tokyo, on the occasion of his investiture in 1962 as Danjûrô XI, the eleventh in his family to be elected to take that name since the actor and playwright, Danjuro I (1660-1704). Performing here on the hanamichi, the ramp which runs from the stage to the back of the auditorium, Danjûrô displays the bravado, athletic arogato style of kabuki acting. His successor, Danjûrô XII, has held the name since 1985. Images of all the Danjuros since 1693 can be found at http://www.kabuki21.com/danjuro.php Photo © Gary Jay Williams.
