5.2 (Figure 5.8 in our book—Garrick case study

Mr. Garrick in the Character of King Lear, mezzotint, hand-colored, by James McArdell, 1761, after a painting by Benjamin Wilson. With the mad Lear in the storm scene are Kent (Astley Bransby) and Edgar (William Havard). Shakespeare’s Fool character is missing from this scene because his role was cut in Nahum Tate’s sentimental adaptation. Neooclassicism dictated that comedy and tragedy should not be mixed.
