In a performance of the noh play Dôjôji at the Kanze Theatre, Tokyo, 1962, the ghost of a maiden, dressed as a beautiful shirabyôshi dancer, approaches the bell at Dôjô Temple. Here, the actor moves from the hashigakari (bridgeway) onto the main stage, symbolizing the passage from the spirit world to this world. (See the Chapter 3 case study on this play.)
