Preface

This Companion Website is designed to accompany the textbook: Judaism: History, Belief and Practice. Divided into ninety chapters, it parallels the text of the Judaism book and should be read in conjunction with it. Each chapter is divided into three sections: Things to Think About; Things to Do; and Tips for Teachers. The first two sections are directed at students, whereas the third section is for teachers, although students may wish to follow some of these suggestions where possible. It should be stressed that both Things to Do and Tips for Teachers should be viewed simply as recommendations – if they are not suitable or practical, they should simply be ignored.

Throughout this Companion, students are encouraged to use the Internet to obtain valuable information and to discover books dealing with the topics under discussion. Although I have suggested that Amazon.com be consulted for books and Google.com for information, other booksellers and search engines could be used as well. Throughout I have referred readers to sample websites, but students are encouraged to surf the web themselves. The aim of both Judaism: History, Belief and Practice and the Companion Website is to provide a comprehensive guide to Judaism as it has developed over nearly four thousand years of history.

There is a wealth of information on the net concerning various aspects of Judaism. Students should go to Yahoo and type in ‘judaism’ to obtain a list of relevant topics including chatlines and forums. Note the link ‘Faith and Practice’. In addition, if you have a question about any of the subjects in the Judaism: History, Belief and Practice book, you can contact a rabbi directly (from any of the major Jewish religious groups) on www.jewish.com/askarabbi.

Explanations of material in Judaism: History, Belief and Practice can be found in the online encyclopedias: www.wikipedia.org and www.jewishencyclopedia.com.
