Essay Titles
The following suggestions are based on some of
the essay and project titles given to my students over the last
few years. You can use these as ideas for the range of possible
topics that are possible, and also to see which areas within stylistics
are popular with students at the moment. I encourage my students
at Belfast to generate their own areas for investigation and their
own titles, in consultation with me. Many prefer to do this than
to follow the pre-prepared material below, and recent work included
an analysis of patterns of dialogue in the film Get Shorty,
a study of point of view in the Eagles' song Hotel California,
and an exploration of politeness strategies among the characters
in Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day.
Some of the texts selected in the questions have
been addressed by other stylisticians in various publications, and
where this has happened I have added the relevant references (or
some other signal) in red. (This is
not of course done in the version I give to the students, but if
their reading does lead them to the relevant sources, then is to
be applauded).
