About the Author
Jane Sunderland is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics
and Modern English Language, UK, where she teaches 'Gender and Language'
on Masters and doctoral programmes. She has recently published Gendered
Discourse (Palgrave Macmillan, 2004), and has co-edited (with
Lia Litosseliti) Gender Identity and Discourse Analysis
(John Benjamins, 2002). She is Vice President of IGALA (International
Gender and Language Association) and an active member of the British
Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Gender and Language SiG.
Together with the other organisers of the recent BAAL/CUP seminar
'Theoretical and Methodological Approaches to Gender and Language
Study', she is currently involved in publishing an edited collection
on this theme. Her main interests within the gender and language
field are 'parenting' magazines, fatherhood texts, children's literature,
gender and language education, and different approaches to gender
and language study. She is also interested in distance education,
doctoral education, and the nature of academic discourse.
Jane's main administrative responsibility at Lancaster University
is to co-ordinate the 'PhD
in Applied Linguistics by Thesis and Coursework' and 'New
Route in Applied Linguistics' PhD programmes.
She also co-ordinates Lancaster University's 'Gender
and Language Research Group' and supervises several research
students working on gender and language topics.
Prior to teaching at Lancaster University, Jane taught ESL in Papua
New Guinea and Australia, and EFL, EAP and teacher education in
the People's Republic of China. She has a twelve-year-old
daughter, Emily, and enjoys regular and frequent visits to the theatre,
and walking in the Lake District.
