Lecture 1: Leadership journeys, stories and maps
The key learning objective is for readers to become aware of a coherent approach for developing critical thinking skills applied to personal (leadership) development.
The Lecture provides the introduction to concepts required for effective study of the contents of each of the subsequent Lectures. It lays out the basic intention of the book as a means of supporting personal development of ‘leaders and would-be leaders’. Current beliefs (platforms of understanding) are presented as maps. Personal Development requires skills of map-reading, map-testing and map-making.
The recommended study approach is to examine leadership maps for their concealed dilemmas, which when explored, challenge the map-reader to reflect more deeply on his or her knowledge and beliefs about leadership. The introductory materials are supported by a summary ‘map of maps’ of contemporary thinking on leadership (including historically important concepts such as trait theory, charisma, situational and contingency theories) prior to new leadership ideas of the 1980s. Box 1 (The Departure Lounge Dilemma) provides practice on the concepts covered in the Lecture.
