About the Book
Sample Chapter
A third issue which shapes and confronts EAP is the consequences
of the dominance that English has assumed in higher education and
research throughout the world. Depending on one's perspective, English
in these circumstances can be viewed as neutral lingua franca, efficiently
facilitating the free exchange of knowledge, or as a Tyrannosaurus
rex, 'a powerful carnivore gobbling up the other denizens of the
academic linguistic grazing grounds' (Swales, 1997: 374).
