Ordinal numbers

In this unit you met ordinal numbers first, second, third... Here is some practice. Kings, popes, etc. are numbered, as in English, using ordinal numbers. Here are some well-known figures from history and the recent past. We will tell you the Italian name and leave you to fill in the number in letters.

(N.B. Italian does not include the word for 'the'. Charles the third is Carlo terzo)

1. The monarch that reigned in Italy between 1861 and 1878 was:

Vittorio Emanuele II

2.Pio IX

3. A much loved 20th century pope was John XXIII

Giovanni

4. The present queen of the United Kingdom is Elizabeth II

Elisabetta

5. Another great English monarch was Elizabeth I

Elisabetta

6. Her father was also famous, some would say infamous: Henry VIII

Enrico

7. A well-known play by the Italian playwright, Pirandello, is entitled Henry IV

Enrico

It is not about a real king but about a man who thought he was Enrico IV.

8. The queen of the United Kingdom, Victoria was succeeded by her son, Edward VII

Edoardo

9. An early English king was the subject of one of Shakespeare’s plays, Richard III

Riccardo

10. The word for century is “secolo” so we are now in

Il secolo.

If incorrect: Refer to the list of ordinal numbers in your course book. Don’t forget they agree with the noun, so when the noun is feminine (a queen for instance) the ordinal number is feminine too.
