Articulated prepositions

In this unit you met the articulated prepositions. On paper they look rather frightening but they are just a reflection of the way, in speech, the words get run together. So try to say them and think of the smooth flow of sound which speech involves. Here is some practice in writing. In each of the following sentences there is a blank space. Choose one of the three articulated prepositions given and type it in the blank space to complete the sentence. You need to know whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural and also take into account the first sound of the word. Try saying the sentence to yourself.

1. Mi piace venire in questo giardino. C’è un panorama magnifico (sulla, sul or sullo) valle.

2. (Nelle, Nella or Nel) piazza davanti (ai, al, or all’) duomo c’è una fontana molto bella.

3. Questa piazza è (al, ai or allo) centro (del, dello or della) città

4. La gente sale (sul, sull' or sullo) autobus.

5. I viaggiatori devono passare per il controllo elettronico (dei, del or dello) bagaglio e poi il controllo (dei, del or dello) passaporti.

6. I contadini vengono (dal, dalla or dalle) campagna a vendere i loro prodotti (alla, allo or al) mercato.

7. Questi turisti vengono (dallo, dagli or dai) Stati Uniti; quelli (dalla, dall’ or dal) Canada.

8. Andiamo (ai, al or allo) stadio a vedere la partita.
