In Class

These tasks are designed for small discussion groups of two or three people and for larger group discussion of the various answers.

  1. Describe the possible patterns of exercise for anyone you suspect is ‘exercise dependent’.
  2. How risky is exercise dependence?
  3. Provide examples of how you think society has played a part in developing muscle dysmorphia in some people?
  4. How would you advise a sport and recreation facility to minimise the development of either exercise dependence or muscle dysmorphia in their clients?
  5. Are all athletes who need to do a high volume of training exercise dependent?

Out of Class

Find Table 10.1 in the book. Select a condition from the sub-categories that has not been discussed in Chapter 10. For this condition write a 500 word report that provides a description of the condition and the symptoms a person who has this condition would have. The report should also provide a summary of the benefits (particularly the psychological benefits) that regular activity might have for this condition and the challenges to adherence to physical activity that a person suffering from this condition might have. Use relevant textbooks from medicine/sports medicine or websites but be sure not to plagiarise and remember to cite the sources of your information.
