In Class

Refer to Box 4.3 in this chapter

You have joined a physical education department in a school as a new teacher. The department has used a fitness test which each year group and posts the results for each child onto a notice board showing whether they are poor, average, or good. The head teacher asks you to say what you think of this process. Outline what you might say.

Out of Class

In Chapter 4, we cover Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Dr David Markland (University of Wales, Bangor) has produced research covering the measurement of SDT constructs in physical activity and this information can be found in this website http://www.bangor.ac.uk/~pes004/exercise_motivation/scales.htm. Go to the website and:

  1. go to the Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ)
  2. read the text on the web page
  3. download and read this paper: Markland, D. & Tobin, V. (2004). A modification of the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire to include an assessment of amotivation. Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, 26, 191–196.
  4. go to BREQ 2 downloads and print a copy of the scale
  5. complete the questionnaire for yourself
  6. score the questionnaire and write a 500 word report on your profile across the different subscale of SDT.
