Chapter 7

In Class

In the book, we say that social support is usually seen in terms of emotional, informational and material support. You should refer to Table 7.2 to see the possible role of each in physical activity. You should then discuss, with a partner in class, each of these sources and decide whether a) you need such support, and b) you receive such support.

    In summary:
  1. emotional support for physical activity: do you need this and do you receive it?
  2. informational support for physical activity: do you need this and do you receive it?
  3. material support for physical activity: do you need this and do you receive it?

Out of Class

Consider an exercise class that you have attended recently. It could be aerobics, yoga, spin class or any class that has a teacher/leader. If you have not attended such a class in the last month please try to attend one or observe one (with the class teacher's permission of course). In 500 words provide a brief description of the class and a critique of how the class and the class teacher may have played a positive or a negative role in promoting regular attendance at this class.
