About the Book

A Practical Guide to Teaching History in the Secondary School provides practical guidance, ideas and tasks to support trainee history teachers and their mentors. It will also help the development of imaginative lessons on aspects of history teaching in a variety of different content areas and teaching situations.

This accessible workbook includes a range of features, designed to improve practical teaching skills, particularly in those areas of acknowledged concern and difficulty for the trainee history teacher. These resources include:

  • case studies
  • examples of existing good practice
  • a range of tried-and-tested strategies
  • examples of the use of ICT

Also provided is a wealth of helpful resources and training materials. Activities in each chapter provide a toolkit to help trainee history teachers analyse their learning and performance.

This book complements and extends the popular textbook, Learning to Teach History in the Secondary School (also published by Routledge), providing detailed examples of theory in practice. The authors, practising Heads of History departments or PGCE history tutors, use their extensive experience to analyse and explain successful teaching approaches and show how current issues and debates influence decision-making.

In addition, this book is integrated with an extensive companion website which provides further guidance, more exemplar material and links to further reading. This workbook will be invaluable to all trainee history teachers.
