Chapter Three

Chapter Three Introduction | Objectives/outcomes Bank | Tracking an Objective Through a Lesson | example Bosplan | example Evidence | example Timeplan | example Henry | example Tudor | Assessing the objective/outcome |
Exemplar Lesson Plans - 1 2 3 4 5 | Hughs Account | Scripts

This chapter focuses on some aspects of planning that have been known to be problematic for trainee history teachers. The first section helps you to construct precise lesson objectives and to be able to structure your teaching so that opportunities arise for them to be achieved during the course of the lesson. It also helps you to select objectives, which reflect the breadth of aims considered in Chapter 3.

For this first section the chapter website reproduces an unpublished booklet on lesson planning by Martin Hunt, written in 1998. This material is also available at:

www.uea.ac.uk/~m242/historypgce/planning from which the ‘Thinking It Through’ items have been downloaded.

The second and third sections address the more complex tasks involved in medium-term planning. The activities are designed to help you plan a series of lessons, which have an overarching Key Element or part of a Key Element, which is logically developed throughout the lessons, however, the individual lessons are free-standing and include a variety of approaches and resources.

The chapter website has materials relating to the exemplar lessons on Henry II and Becket, which form the basis of these sections of the chapter. They have been devised by Gail Wake, Matthew Little, John Kirkham and Lisa Whitby.
