Chapter Six Chapter Five Introduction | Year 9 role play: Murder at Sarajevo | Introduction: Webpage for Chapter 6 Chapter 6 has taken one of the aspects of developing historical understanding covered in Chapter 5 of Learning to Teach History in the Secondary School, that ishistorical causation. The focus of the chapter is the planning and delivery of lessons, which will assess the pupils’ understanding of this concept. Unless there is very careful thought, it is questionable to what extent pupils actually understand causation. Chris Chambers tackles this challenge with three lessons on the English Civil War. These lessons were taught in a comprehensive school to classes in Year 8, who were divided according to ability. The chapter website complements the text of the book and both are needed for a full appreciation of the work with the pupils and the discussion of the issues. There are three zip files: one file for each of the three lessons. These lessons were taught to a middle set, containing pupils of average ability. Contained within each file are the teaching resources and a lesson plan. You may find it useful to familiarize yourself with the lesson plan before accessing the associated resources. These resources may be downloaded and adapted for classroom use only. When adapted, the copyright of the original source must be acknowledged. In addition, there is a fourth item, which is a supplement to the chapter in the book.
