Recommended Readings
The works listed below offer in-depth studies of major topics broached in this book. I have included some works mentioned in the footnotes but also list major works that I did not specifically cite in the book—including new works published after China in War and Revolution appeared. Most of these works are full-length monographic treatments of specific topics, some are edited volumes, and a few are individual articles. In addition to these works, the essays in the relevant volumes of The Cambridge History of China (volumes 10-13 on the late Qing and the Republican period, Cambridge University Press, 1978-1986) are aging gracefully and several are not dated at all: they remain a good starting point. The Cambridge History’s bibliographies are also useful. As well, the journals Modern China and Twentieth-Century China (formerly Republican China) consistently publish first-rate scholarship dealing with the issues raised in this book. Also useful, if broader in focus, are Late Imperial China; Modern Asian Studies; Journal of Asian Studies; positions; and China Quarterly. The readings listed here are far from exhaustive; as well, the categories and chronology used below are inevitably arbitrary.
