This volume presents the contemporary issues surrounding groundwater pollution risk assessment and the application of vulnerability and risk assessment maps for the effective protection and management of aquifers. Numerous new and improved approaches to intrinsic and specific vulnerability assessment (modified DRASTIC, GOD, VULK, VURAAS) are described, some coupled with geophysical and hydrological surveys and hydrodynamic and transport modelling. Widespread use is made of GIS format.

About the Editors

Andrzej J.Witkowski was born 1950 and received his MS (1973) and PhD (1983) from The University of Warsaw. He is Senior Lecturer at the University of Silesia, Poland, author and co-author of 90 scientific articles. He is certified professional hydrogeologist (American Institute of Hydrology and Polish Ministry of Environment), and consultant in many international projects. Since 2003 he serves as President of International Mine Water Association (IMWA).

Andrzej Kowalczyk (1950) studied geology at the University of Warsaw. (PhD degree at the Technical University of Wroclaw in 1983). He is presently Associated Professor and head of the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology at the University of Silesia, Poland. He participated in various projects in the field of hydrogeology and is author and co-author of 80 scientific articles.

Jaroslav Vrba (1932) received MS and Doctorate from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He has practiced hydrogeology in many countries for almost 40 years. At present he works in a private consulting practice and as UNESCO consultant for IHP. He chaired and coordinated many UNESCO-IHP groundwater projects and is author, co-author and editor of many articles and books. He is Past Vice President of IAH and Chairman of IAH Commission on Groundwater Protection; appointed honorary member of International Association of Hydrogeologists.

About the Series

IAH - Selected Papers on Hydrogeology

The International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) serves scientists, engineers and other professionals working in the field of groundwater resource planning, management and protection. IAH has two book series which are produced under the imprint of CRC Press in the Netherlands, part of the Taylor and Francis Group. IAH books have the common purpose of spreading the science and knowledge of hydrogeology and are products arising from IAH’s congresses and meetings, its commissions and networks, as well as a variety of other sources. Information is gathered from highly respected sources and include case studies, regional descriptions, analyses of sub-disciplines and outputs from major international programmes.

Selected Papers
The first series is the Selected Papers, often referred to as the ‘green books’. These are collections of papers derived from Congress and other meetings which normally, but not always, were sponsored by IAH. They may also be a collection of papers derived from a programme of investigation that again need not necessarily have enjoyed direct IAH involvement.

International Contributions to Hydrogeology
The second series, International Contributions to Hydrogeology, the ‘blue books’, includes monographs on sub-disciplines of hydrogeology as well as outlets for major international investigatory programmes and collections of papers within a broad theme of international interest.
