Studies of household labor have largely neglected the employment of domestic workers nor have they sufficiently addressed the issue of unpaid housework. Focusing on both paid and unpaid domestic work, Maid in the USA expands the theoretical understanding of reproductive labor to explain the dynamics of race, class and gender in housework. Through interviews with 25 Chicana private household workers, Mary Romero provides a unique exploration of their working conditions, and the social constraints which shape their personal lives.

"Mary Romero's articulate and insightful book . . . [is] a welcome addition ot the growing literature on women of color." -- The Women's Review of Books

"Maid in the U.S.A. is a well-written, insightful presentation of ethnographic data." -- The Annals

"Romero's book is a huge step forward in our understanding not only of domestic work but of work in the informal economy. Her plea is that all employers of dimestic workers should think of their employees with more awareness. These _employers need to understand that their homes are workplaces and that they must dispense with the attitude for benevolent maternalism and substitute an attitude of responsible employers." -- Affilia

"[a] sweeping theoretical and historical survey …" -- Journal of American Ethnic History
