Following the popularity of the previous edition, Shallow Foundations: Bearing Capacity and Settlement, Third Edition, covers all the latest developments and approaches to shallow foundation engineering. In response to the high demand, it provides updated data and revised theories on the ultimate and allowable bearing capacities of shallow foundations. Additionally, it features the most recent developments regarding eccentric and inclined loading, the use of stone columns, settlement computations, and more. Example cases have been provided throughout each chapter to illustrate the theories presented.

Introduction. Ultimate Bearing Capacity Theories—Centric Vertical Loading. Ultimate Bearing Capacity under Inclined and Eccentric Loads. Special Cases of Shallow Foundations. Settlement and Allowable Bearing Capacity. Dynamic Bearing Capacity and Settlement. Shallow Foundations on Reinforced Soil. Uplift Capacity of Shallow Foundations.

    Biography

Professor Braja M. Das received his Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. In 2006, after serving 12 years as dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento, Professor Das retired and now lives in the Las Vegas, Nevada, area.

A fellow and life member in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Professor Das served on the ASCE’s Shallow Foundations Committee, Deep Foundations Committee, and Grouting Committee. He was also a member of the ASCE’s editorial board for the Journal of Geotechnical Engineering. From 2000 to 2006, he was the co-editor of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering – An International Journal published by Springer in the Netherlands. Now an emeritus member of the Committee of Chemical and Mechanical Stabilization of the Transportation Research Board of the National Research Council of the United States, he served as committee chair from 1995 to 2001. He is also a life member of the American Society for Engineering Education. He is currently the editor-in-chief of the journal – the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering – published by Taylor and Francis (UK)]. The first issue of the journal was released in October 2007.

Dr. Das has received numerous awards for teaching excellence. He is the author of several geotechnical engineering text and reference books and has authored numerous technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering. His primary areas of research include shallow foundations, earth anchors, and geosynthetics.]

"Very comprehensive coverage of all aspects of shallow foundations, including recent advances in theory and practice. The book will be very suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students. The practitioners can use it as a great reference. Large number of worked out examples is a big plus."
    — Khaled Sobhan, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida, USA

"I am very much used to Braja Das style of presentation when it comes to textbooks. No one can do this better. The illustrations, examples, simple approach and the flow make the book an interesting read. He has presented a complex subject in a simple manner. While making the book an easy read, he has not sacrificed the richness of the content."
    — Nagaratnam Sivakugan, James Cook University, Queensland, Australia

"The book is one of the most comprehensive work on various aspects of shallow foundations. Details of bearing capacity theories have been presented with the help of lucid figures. Detailed derivation of these theories have been presented and solved numerical examples have also been included. This helps undergraduate and postgraduate students, academicians and practicing engineers to develop better understanding about the subject. As a teacher, research worker and a consultant, I find this book extremely useful and hence I strongly recommend this book."
    — Priti Maheshwari, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India

"I am confident that this the best book of shallow foundations."
    — Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia

"This book gives a detailed insight and overview of the two key design parameters of shallow foundations such as bearing capacity and settlement. All recent developments that are available in literature are presented in summarized form in this book. …I find this book to be very helpful to me as well as to my students. Many a times I refer this book also as a consultant. I strongly recommend this book."
    — Chittaranjan Patra, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India
