Description

The topic of workplace bullying and abuse gained considerable public and media attention during 2013 when the scandal of events at the BBC was unveiled following an enquiry led by Dinah Rose QC. The Handbook of Dealing with Workplace Bullying, edited by Dr Anne-Marie Quigg, presents the collective wisdom and knowledge of a number of lawyers, management experts and academics from around the world. The key themes include understanding the law in each country represented and the responsibilities of individuals as well as management teams and governors in organizations. New case studies are supplied by people working with and within HR teams who have professional experience of dealing with the issue, as well as practical suggestions that are of use to managers, to people accused of bullying and also to people who find they are targets of bullying. Dr Quigg summarizes the range and scope of the contributions by the individual contributors, commenting on the research findings and professional experience that informs them. The book thus reflects the variety of options for dealing with bullying that are relevant in different parts of the world, and focuses on advice that is pertinent in real life, rather than presenting a collection of academic theories.

Reviews

’This is an excellent resource in the study of workplace bullying. What sets this book apart is the wide range of perspectives that have been taken, identifying the multifaceted nature of the subject. The authors show passion and rigour in their work, and provide a unique insight into this important and complex area.’ Mark Horan, Huddersfield University, UK ’Bullying is a blight on the performing arts profession, whether for artists themselves or for those working behind the scenes. The Handbook of Dealing with Workplace Bullying offers international perspectives on the serious problems that exist in all types of workplace and provides useful and timely information about how to understand the issues involved and how to deal with them.’ Christine Payne, General Secretary, Equity ’This manual breaks the culture of silence on snakes in suits and workplace fungus. Compulsory reading for bully and bullied, managers and managed, it gives us a greater understanding of how to prevent, recognise and deal with bullying at work, helping us spot it in ourselves or others as the first step to stamping it out of our workplaces.’ Sophie Hope, Birkbeck, University of London, UK ’The causes and demographics behind bullying are explored in depth here. But things shift up a gear with an excellent chapter from Sarah Crayford Brown … followed by a range of case studies and some counter-intuitive thoughts on the perspective of the accused.’ People Management, August 2015
