BiographyParmjit S. Panesar is a doctorate in biotechnology from Punjabi University, Patiala, India, with more than 16 years experience in the area of food biotechnology and enzyme/fermentation technology. He now works as Professor, Biotechnology Research Laboratory, Department of Food Engineering & Technology, Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (deemed to be university; established by the Government of India), Longowal, Punjab, India. In 2005, he was awarded BOYSCAST (Better Opportunities for Young Scientists in Chosen Areas of Science & Technology) fellowship by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, to carry out advance research in industrial biotechnology at Chembiotech Laboratories, University of Birmingham Research Park, Birmingham, United Kingdom. His postdoctoral research focused on the development of immobilized cell technology for the production of lactic acid from whey. Besides, he has also been involved in U.S.- and Australian-sponsored projects on the scale-up of a commercial polysaccharide derivative in biomedical applications and critical evaluation
of a commercial test kit for the detection of trace levels of explosives. In 1999, Dr. Panesar was awarded the Young Scientist Fellowship by the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, Punjab. He has undergone advance training from different leading institutes/labs, including the International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, Trieste, Italy; the Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh; Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore; and National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India. Dr. Panesar has published more than 85 international/national scientific papers, 50 book reviews in peer-reviewed journals, and 20 chapters and has authored/edited 5 books. He is a member of the editorial advisory boards of national/international journals including ‘International Journal of Biological Macromolecules’ and of various national and international professional bodies and committees, including scientific panel on “Genetically modified organisms and foods” constituted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. He is also a member of curriculum development committee for designing syllabi for the food technology and biotechnology courses of various institutes/universities of India. He has successfully handled four major research projects sponsored by different funding agencies, such as Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Human Resources Development, New Delhi. He is a life member of the International Forum on Industrial Bioprocesses, Biotechnology Research Society of India, Association of Microbiologists of India, Association of Food Scientists, Indian Science Congress Association, and Technologists and Indian Society for Technical Education. He is also on the reviewer panel of many national/international journals related to food and biotechnology. His research interests include microbial fermentation, application of immobilized cells/enzymes in different bioprocesses, and synthesis of prebiotics.
