Theresa-Mare Rhyne to moderate Color Mavens Panel at SIGGRAPH 2018 in Vancouver, Canada

By: Theresa-Marie Rhyne
Subjects: Computer Science & Engineering

At SIGGRAPH 2018, on Sunday, August 12, 2018, from 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM in the East Building Ballroom A of the Vancouver Convention Center, Theresa-Marie Rhyne, author of "Applyling Color Theory to Digital Media and VIsualization" from CRC Press, will moderate a panel on "Color Mavens Advise on Digital Media Creation and Tools". She organized and proposed the panel to highlight the process of designing and capturing color schemes for digital media composition. A group of "Color Mavens"  are on the panel and include Nicholas Bazarian from X-Rite/Pantone, Jose Echevarria from Adobe Systems, Michael Murdoch from Rochester Insitute of Technology, and Danielle Feinberg from Pixar Animaiton Studios.

To start the panel off, Rhyne will introduce a few color fundamentals such as an overivew of color models, the concept of color harmony, and  how human color perception is imperfect.  Bazarian, Pantone's Digital Product Manager, will highlight products developed for designers, pre-media, and printers to keep color predictable, achievable, and consistent. Echevarria, a Research Scientist at Adobe Systems, will discuss how Adobe is building a new wave of color tools that enhance creation and refinement of color themes, provide meaningful and capable color-aware searches, new and improved tools to apply color theme and improve color composition and re-imagined color mixing for digital painting. Murdoch, an Assistant Professor at Rochester Institue of Technology's Munsell Color Science Laboratory, will review how color appearance models predict the state of adaptation of a viewer and thereby the changes colors appear to undergo when the presentation environment is changed with suggestions on what to expect and avoid in color appearance across digital media platforms. Danielle Feinberg, Director of Photography for Lighting at Pixar Animation Studios, will demonstrate how color is heavily used to illicit emotion in feature film and computer animation noting examples from Pixar films like WALL°E and Coco.

Theresa-Marie's presentation will feature elements from her CRC Press book on "Apply Color Theory to Digital Media and Visualization". More information on her book is available at https://www.crcpress.com/Applying-Color-Theory-to-Digital-Media-and-Visualization/Rhyne/p/book/9781498765497
