Anya M. Hillery lectures in Health Sciences at Saint Louis University - Madrid Campus, Spain. She has previously served as Director of the Department of Science and Engineering, as well as Vice Dean, of SLU-Madrid. Her research focuses on oral peptide and vaccine delivery. She has published extensively in the field and presented widely at international conferences. She has won various research awards and secured considerable research funding.

Biography

Anya Hillery received her B.Sc. in Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 1990, receiving the Trinity College Gold Medal of Outstanding Achievement. She was awarded a scholarship by Syntex Research (UK) Ltd., to carry out her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics under the supervision of Professor Sandy Florence, at the School of Pharmacy, Brunswick Square, University College London, UK.  She continued with post-doctoral research studies at the Square on being awarded a Maplethorpe Research Fellowship. She then moved to the Department of Pharmacy, University of Brighton, UK, in 1996, initially as a Lecturer, and then Senior Lecturer, in Pharmaceutical Sciences. This was followed by move in 1999 to Saint Louis University - Madrid Campus, Spain, beginning as a Lecturer in Health Sciences, subsequently becoming Director of the Department of Science and Engineering, and then Vice Dean of the university (2001). After some years at home to raise her young family, she has recently returned to academia at SLU-Madrid.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Anya's research has been focused in the field of oral peptide and vaccine delivery. She has published 20 original research papers in leading peer-reviewed international journals and presented widely at international conferences. She has won various awards, including the UK Controlled Release Society Award in 1996 and the Janssen Silver Medal Award for Research (1990).  She secured various research grants (from The Wellcome Trust, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the University of Brighton), which provided considerable research funding. She also acts as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies on drug delivery projects.
