Associate Head of Dept: Broadcast & Journalism
University of the West of England

I am currently responsible for a suite of undergraduate and postgraduate journalism programmes at the University of the West England. I also teach into numerous modules and my research interests are core journalism skills, use of data, freedom of information and investigative journalism. I have been a journalist for more than 20 years covering stories nationally and internationally. My first book 'Blacklisted' exposed a scandal in the construction industry and was shortlisted for an award.

Biography

I trained first as a journalist becoming qualified in 1994 and working for a number of newspapers in the West Country. I subsequently went freelance and wrote articles for a huge range of publications including a number of investigative pieces for national newspapers. I continue to produce journalism. I started lecturing at the University of the West of England in 2008 and am now Associate Head of Department for Broadcast and Journalism. I am responsible for three undergraduate and two postgraduate programmes; two of which are professionally accredited. I am Associate Fellow with the Higher Education Academy. My first book, 'Blacklisted: the secret battle between big business and union activists', was published in 2015. It exposed a spying scandal in the construction industry which also implicated the police and intelligence services. Construction firms subsequently paid out some £75m in compensation. I continue to research issues around surveillance, freedom of information and journalism. My book on drones dovetails with those areas and my general interest in emerging technologies for journalists.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

Investigative journalism; data journalism; freedom of information and sunshine/access laws; use of drones by journalists; emerging technologies for journalists; mobile journalism; surveillance.

Personal Interests

A long-time member of the National Union of the Journalists I am a keen supporter of union rights. Pre-dating that is my support for Arsenal football club.
