Julie Elizabeth Smith

Julie is Director of the European Centre in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Robinson College, Cambridge. As Baroness Smith of Newnham she sits in the House of Lords, where she is a member of the International Relations Committee. Her research interests include the History and Politics of the European Union, the UK's relations with the EU and European elections.

Biography

Dr Julie Smith is Director of the European Centre in the Department of Politics and International Studies at Cambridge University.  She co-directs the Master of Studies in International Relations, which is co-organised with the University's Institute for Continuing Education and teaches on the MPhil in International Relations. She is also a Fellow of Robinson College, Cambridge.  From 1999 to 2003 she was Head of the European Programme at Chatham House. Prior to moving to Cambridge, Julie was a Hanseatic Scholar in Hamburg and taught in the International Relations and European Studies Department at the Central European University in Budapest.

As Baroness Smith of Newnham, she sits as a member of the House of Lords, where she focuses in particular on the EU, Defence and Higher Education.  She is a member of the newly created International Relations Committee of the House of Lords, Secretary of the House of Lords Defence Group, co-Secretary of the All-party Parliamentary Group on the Armed Forces and a member of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme.

    The politics of the European Union, the UK's relations with the EU, including the experience of legislating on the EU referendum of 2016.
