Urban Sustainability Expert

I have over a decade of research and practical experience in urban-environment field. Previously, I was associated as a doctoral fellow in Sustainable Urban Futures Programme at United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), Tokyo, where my research explored the role of sustainability at the interface of global environmental change and local urban governance, with a focus on energy and emissions in developing countries.

Biography

I have over a decade of research and practical experience in urban-environment field. As a doctoral fellow in Sustainable Urban Futures Programme at United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), Tokyo, my research explored the role of sustainability at the interface of global environmental change and local urban governance, with a focus on energy and emissions in developing countries. Previously, I was involved in research studies, development consultancy, appraisals and formulation of environmental plans for national governments, statutory bodies, and international/ multilateral funding organizations, including the World Bank and WWF. I have been a guest faculty in postgraduate courses and supervised several dissertation and thesis. I have been invited as a jury member to international competitions and academic defences, and as reviewer in peer-reviewed journals like EEMJ & JGRP. In addition to inquiries of environment and sustainability within the developing context, I have keen research interest in themes of green growth, environmental resources, low-carbon societies and energy planning, sustainable transport, optimization models and green habitat. Born in India and obtained primary education in London, U.K. (1986-1991), I came back to New Delhi to finish my high school and later pursue Bachelor of Architecture. Thereafter, I attained a Masters in Planning, specialization in Environmental Planning from the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi and a Masters in Mass Communications from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, India. I am a recipient of UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship during my doctoral studies, Ministry of Human Resource Development (GATE) Scholarship in masters and was also offered a Liverpool University Scholarship in 2005. I have authored several books, journal articles, book chapters and widely disseminated research, speaking at national/ international workshops, trainings and conferences. I am the Editor of 'Urban India', the research journal of National Institute of Urban Affairs, India.
