BiographyProf Hansen has been working in the field of noise and vibration for 40 years, first as a PhD student, then as a consultant in the USA (four years) and Australia (three years), and finally as an academic at The University of Adelaide, where he has been since 1986. His current appointment is Honorary Emeritus Professor, which he has held since the beginning of 2012.
He has authored or co-authored 11 books, edited two books, contributed seven chapters to various books. His latest book, published by Wiley, is titled, “Wind farm noise: measurement, assessment and control”. His research work in the past has been focused mainly on active noise and vibration control and now also includes the generation, impact and control of wind farm noise, on which he has been working since 2010. In 2012 he received a 3-year grant from The Australian Research Council to investigate the impact of wind farm noise on rural communities. Prior to that he received substantial funding from DSTO, The Australian Research Council and AMIRA, as well as a number of other organisations for his work on expert systems and active cancellation of noise and vibration. In the past 25 years he has been the principal consultant on over 75 projects on noise and vibration control, including a review of noise reduction activities for the Collins Class submarines.
Prof Hansen served for two years (2000-2002) as President of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV) and has also served in a number of other executive positions in the same organization since 1997. He is an Honorary Fellow of IIAV, a Fellow of the Australian Acoustical Society and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. He was awarded two Erskine Fellowships to spend 4 months in 2008 and 4 months in 2010 at The University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
He was awarded the 2009 Rayleigh Medal by the British institute of Acoustics for outstanding contributions to acoustics, the 2013 A.G.M. Michell medal by Engineers Australia for outstanding service to the discipline of Mechanical Engineering and the 2014 Rossing Prize in Acoustics Education by the Acoustical Society of America.
