Uniting Church in Australia

I am an ordained minister of the Uniting Church in Australia. I was for 18 years Director of Studies: Church History at Trinity Theological College, Brisbane. I taught courses in Early Church History and Patristics. My doctoral thesis on Tertullian's doctrines of church and ministry was published by CUP in 1995. Since then I have two books published by Ashgate - one on Athenagoras (2009) - and one, under the Routledge imprint, on understandings of the afterlife in the early church (2017).

Biography

I was born and educated in Melbourne but have spent the past  26 years in Brisbane (apart from three years in the UK). I trained for the Ministry of the Word in the Uniting Church in Australia - a union of the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches in 1977 - in the Melbourne Theological Hall and was ordained in late 1980. I served in two parishes in the Synod of Victoria - while also teaching part-time in the Theological Hall and also spending one year in Cambridge at Wesley House - before moving to Brisbane in 1992 to take up a teaching role on the faculty of Trinity Theological College. I served there for 18 years and also held the additional posts of Academic Dean for 10 years and Principal for six. I was also Head of the School of Theology at Griffith University for 6 years during that time. I have had four books published on patristic subjects and a number of journal articles and book chapters. For the last eight years I have served in congregational placements in both the Methodist Church in Great Britain (three years) and back home in Brisbane (five). As I type this Bio I am preparing to take my last service before retirement on Easter Sunday (1 April 2018).
