Richard Neapolitan Author of Evaluating Organization Development

Richard Neapolitan

Computer Science Department, Northeastern Illinois University

I have a Ph.D. in mathematics, but have conducted interdisciplinary research my entire career. I have published papers in medical informatics, bioinformatics, psychology, computer science, philosophy, and mathematics. I have written six books including the 1989 seminal text Probabilistic Reasoning in Expert Systems, which formalized the field we now call Bayesian networks., and the 2004 text Learning Bayesian networks, which established learning Bayesian networks from data as a field of study.

My research interests include philosophy of science, probability and statistics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and applications of probabilistic modeling to fields such as medicine, biology, psychology, and finance. These interests have resulted in my publishing numerous papers in the broad area of reasoning under uncertainty during the past 30 years. Books I have written include Probabilistic Reasoning in Expert Systems (1989); Learning Bayesian Networks (2004); Foundations of Algorithms (1996, 1998, 2003, 2010), which has been translated into three languages; Probabilistic Methods for Financial and Marketing Informatics (2007); Probabilistic Methods for Bioinformatics (2009); Contemporary Artificial Intelligence (2012); and Artificial Intelligence: With an Introduction to Machine Learning (2018).
My seminal 1989 text Probabilistic Reasoning in Expert Systems served to establish the field we now call Bayesian networks, and my leading 2004 text Learning Bayesian Networks formalized learning Bayesian networks from data as a field of study.
I have an international reputation both as a theoretician and a practitioner and have been invited to speak and conduct classes nationally and internationally.
