Dr. Rajendra Baikady is a Social Work educator and researcher. He is the winner of the Special Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Johannesburg(2020), the Golda Meir Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2019-2020) and the Confucius Studies Understanding China Fellowship (Post-Doctoral Research) at Shandong University(2018-2019). Baikady was one among the 20 selected candidates for the Short Term Research Award (STRA) by the Government of Taiwan.

Biography

Rajendra Baikady is an educator, researcher and expert in social work education and practice with a Global approach. Currently, Baikady holds a special post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Social Work, University of Johannesburg, South Africa.  He has a wide research experience in evaluating best practices of social work education and practice at both Local and Global level. He was awarded the Taiwan Government, Short Term Research Award (2018), for academic research at National Chengchi University, Taiwan and Confucius Institute Understanding China Fellow by the Government of China (2018-2019) for academic Research at Shandong University, China. He completed his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel (2019-2020) and was awarded Golda Meir Fellowship by Lady Davis Trust at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 2016 Baikady received Inlaks Research Travel Grant and ICSSR Travel Abroad Scholarship for his Doctoral research focusing on India and China. He is the editor-in-chief of the Palgrave Handbook of Global Social Change & the Palgrave Handbook of Global Social Problems (Palgrave Macmillan, UK).  Notable work by Baikady includes The Oxford Handbook of Power, Politics and Social Work (Oxford University Press, New York), The Palgrave Handbook of Global Social Work Education (Palgrave Macmillan, New York) and The Routledge International Handbook of Field Work Education in Social Work (Routledge, New York). the former one questions and explores the ‘state’s’ role in social work development across the globe and the latter two explores the development, growth and challenges for social work education and practice across the globe.

Challenges for social work education in China: findings from three metropolises

the present study reports on qualitative interviews with a group of social work postgraduate (n = 33) students from five schools of social work covering Shandong, Shanghai and Beijing provinces in the country. The study finds that there are four major challenges for social work education in China: (i) the use of Western concepts in the Chinese context; (ii) a journey from the unknown to the known; (iii) first-generation learners; and (iv) the lack of professional identity.

The study reported on the results of qualitative interviews conducted with 33 social work educators across five schools of social work located in three metropolitan cities in India ‒ New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. The study finds that there are four major challenges for social work education in India: (i) the problem of definition; (ii) the lack of a regulatory framework; (iii) diversity among the schools; (iv) the lack of professional identity.

Dr Rajendra Baikady, Golda Meir Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel has been appointed as the Senior Research Associate at the Department of Social Work, University of Johannesburg, South Africa.  This special appointment is for a period of three years (from September 2019 to October 2022) and the position encourages academic visit, enables to work on the collaborative projects and Publications. Dr Baikady has carried out extensive research on the development of social work education in India and China. His research and teaching area cover, social welfare, social policy and social work education. During this appointment at University of Johannesburg Dr Baikady will work on various joint projects along with faculties in the department of social work.

Rajendra Baikady receives Golda Meir Post Doctoral Fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel

Dr Rajendra Baikady has been awarded the prestigious 'Golda Meir' Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.  The fellowship is awarded by the Lady Davis trust at the Hebrew University and the selection was based on a rigorous academic review process at the Department level, Faculty level and University level. The final awardees were decided by the Academic Committee of the Trust based on the academic ranking of the candidates. Rajendra Baikady is one among the rare Researchers who received this fellowship for research in Social Work in the Social Science stream. Dr Baikady will conduct his research under the supervision of Professor Gal on the area “Civil Society Role in Israel’s Social Welfare’ during the academic year 2019-2020.
