Tony Harland

Tony is a marine ecologist who began to study higher education in the 90s. He is currently Professor in the Higher Education Development Centre at the University of Otago, New Zealand.

Biography

Tony studies the purposes of a university education, and the values that underpin teaching and research. His current work examines the idea of Powerful Knowledge and how this might be taught by helping undergraduate apprentices learn by doing authentic research. More recently, the topic of assessment has become a focus for inquiry which is seen through the theoretical lens of neoliberalism. Tony teaches various topics in higher education, including qualitative research methods. For the last 32 years he has taught marine ecology.
