Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

I think deeply about research methodologies in my work with youth and pre-service teachers at all stages of research, from planning to fieldnotes to the dissemination of findings.

My current research program highlights participatory visual research (using art production to answer specific research questions) with youth and pre-service teachers about issues that matter to them. One of my current projects highlights the need to include New Brunswick queer communities' histories within Social Studies classrooms and curricula. One of the outputs of this project is the creation of short cellphilms (cellphone + filmmaking) that highlight how the collection from the Queer Heritage Initiative of New Brunswick might be brought into classrooms.

Other projects I am working on include a study with Dr. Funké Aladejebi and Dr. Jennifer Thompson that explores notions of dystopias (past/present/future) with queer and racialized youth. With Dr. Katie MacEntee and Dr. April Mandrona, I am working on a study looking at how queer youth from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island might produce art pieces and then create a traveling archive of this work to share in schools and community centres across Atlantic Canada. And, another current study highlights the supports and barriers to teaching sex education in New Brunswick (from educators working in early childhood centres to community-based educators) through a mixed-methods approach.

Intellectualizing Whitenes as a Response to Campus Racism: Some Concerns

Published: May 22, 2020 by Ethnic & Racial Studies
Authors: Roger Saul & Casey Burkholder

This paper is rooted in the reactions of our university community to a racist poster that appeared on our campus. It presents a critique of tendencies to intellectualize whiteness in depoliticized forms as a response to acts of racism, tendencies that work to centre “good whiteness” in unconscious ways, obstructing a more robust and determined politics of anti-racism.

Schooling Futures in Tension: On Competing DIscourses at a Technology Education Summit

Published: Jan 30, 2020 by Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy
Authors: Roger Saul & Casey Burkholder
Subjects: Education

Reflecting on an education technology conference we attended in an Atlantic Canadian province, we problematize four major assumptions that we encountered at the conference. Ultimately, we argue that these visions of education for immediate, short term gain fail to consider other, perhaps more dystopian futures facing the learners in our context.
