Biography

Born in 1958. Graduated from the University of Buenos Aires. Research fellow at the National Council for Research, Argentina. Researcher and professor at the School of Architecture of Buenos Aires University, where he is the director of the Research Program on Color, Light and Visual Semiotics. He holds the highest category (level 1) in the national research system of Argentina. He has been a research associate at the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies of Indiana University, USA in 1989 and 1994.

Caivano is currently the president of the International Association of Visual Semiotics (AISV-IAVS), and was the president of the International Color Association (AIC) for the term 2006-2009. He is honorary member of the French association Ad Chroma, and the Portuguese Color Association. He was president of the Argentine Color Group in 1994-2004, vice-president of the AIC in 2004-2005, and chairman of the AIC Study Group on Environmental Color Design in 1997-2005. From 2001 to 2012 he was one of the vice-presidents of the International Association on Visual Semiotics. He was also a member of the advisory board of the International Association for the Interdisciplinary Study of Symmetry. Current or past membership in other scientific associations include: New York Academy of Sciences, International Association for Semiotic Studies, Semiotic Society of America, International Association for the Semiotics of Space, among others.

Caivano has participated in 92 national and international congresses in 28 countries. He was invited lecturer and taught various courses in Argentina and abroad: Taiwan, Turkey, Finland, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Uruguay. He has published 2 books as author, 12 books as editor, and 126 articles in books, proceedings of congresses and international journals such as Color Research and Application (New York, Wiley), Die Farbe (Berlin, Muster-Schmidt), Colour: Design & Creativity (UK, Society of Dyers and Colourists), Optica Pura y Aplicada (Spain), Colore (Italy), Languages of Design (Amsterdam, Elsevier), Leonardo (USA, MIT Press), Semiotica (Berlin, Mouton de Gruyter), Visio (Canada, Journal of the International Association of Visual Semiotics), Cruzeiro Semiotico (Portuguese Association of Semiotics), DeSignis (Barcelona, Gedisa), Symmetry: Art and Science (journal of the Society for the Interdisciplinary Study of Symmetry), and others.

He was for 10 year the editor of the journal AREA, agenda of reflection on architecture, design and urbanism, and the monograph series Serie Difusión, published by the School of Architecture of Buenos Aires University. He is currently the main editor of the Proceedings of the Argentine Color Congresses (9 volumes published to date), associate editor of the journal Color Research and Application, and member of the editorial committee of the journal Colour: Design & Creativity (now Journal of the International Color Association, JAIC). He has been member of the editorial committee and the advisory board of the journals Visio (Canada), Web Architecture Magazine (Spain), Languages of Design (USA), and The Story of Life (India).
