Dr. Deborah Carstens, PMP joined the Florida Institute of Technology in 2003 and is an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems. She instructs both on campus and online courses and serves as the Academic Chair for the Project Management Track in the Online MBA Program.Previously, she worked for NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) from 1992 through 2003 as a researcher, project manager and engineer.

Biography

Dr. Deborah Carstens, PMP joined the Florida Institute of Technology in 2003 and is an Associate Professor of Information Systems.  She instructs both on campus and online courses and serves as the Academic Chair for the Project Management Track in the Online MBA Program.  She instructs courses in MIS, human-computer interaction, project management and product development.  She holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Central Florida (UCF), MBA from Florida Tech and B.S. in Business Administration also from UCF.  She is a Project Management Professional (PMP).  Previously, she worked for NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) from 1992 through 2003 as a researcher, project manager and engineer.  In her career both at Florida Tech and NASA KSC, she has brought in over a million dollars of funded research.  Her research interests are in project management and human error analysis research resulting in the optimization of systems, safety and processes to include government services, mobile devices, healthcare processes and e-commerce.  During 2011-2013, Dr. Carstens is working on a Small Business Administration funded research project as Principal Investigator and Director over the Activity Based Total Accountability (ABTA) Institute (http://abta.fit.edu/about/).  During the 2008-2009 academic year, Dr. Carstens also received funds for the initial stage of the project which was funded by the Florida Department of Education (DOE) research grant where she served as the Principal Investigator and Director over the ABTA Institute.  Dr. Carstens currently consults in the area of project management, usability and human factors and has over forty publications including journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings and a textbook.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Her research interests are in task and human error analyses, usability, project management, human-computer interaction and government accountability. She focues her research on the optimization of human and system performance in terms of usability, safety and efficiency. She also has a background in information security research.
