Kirkland held positions at the University of Regina and the National University of Ireland Maynooth before joining the University of Manitoba in 2013. His research focuses on matrix theory and graph theory, as well as their applications in population dynamics, quantum computing, and Markov chains. He is an Editor in Chief of the journal Linear and Multilinear Algebra, and served as President of the International Linear Algebra Society from 2008 until 2014.
