Ming Tang, AIA, LEED AP, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, a registered architect, and founding partner of Tang & Yang Architects. The firm has won numerous design awards, including first place in d3 Natural System Competition, IAAC self-sufficient housing contest, and Chichen Itza lodge museum design competition. His research includes parametric design, digital fabrication, building information modeling, virtual reality, human-computer interaction (HCI), and performance


Tang, Registered Architect, AIA , LEED AP (BD+C) , is an Assistant Professor at School of Architecture and Interior Design, University of Cincinnati. He is the founding partner of Tang & Yang Architects, which has won numerous design awards in China, Spain, Mexico, U.K. and United States, including, the first prize of d3 Natural System, the first place of Cities with Soul, the first place of IAAC self-sufficient housing contest, the first place of Chichen Itza lodge museum design.

Before he taught at the University of Cincinnati, he led the Electronic Design program ( Digital Design + Computation) at the Savannah College of Art and Design and was a professor in the Architecture Department. He has worked with Michigan State University's M.I.N.D Lab, University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies, and China Architecture Design & Research Group. He holds Master of Architecture Degree from Tsinghua University, Maser of Art Degree in Digital Media and Technology from Michigan State University, and Maser of Final Art degree in Interactive and Game Design from Savannah College of Art and Design. His multi-disciplinary research includes parametric design, digital fabrication, building information modeling, performance driven design, digital computation, virtual reality, algorithm & programming, GIS, simulation, mathematical form, interactive design and visual effects. His research has been published in various international conferences, journals, books and exhibitions. He is the author of the book,Parametric Building Design with Autodesk Maya, published by Routledge in 2014. and urban paleontology, evolution of urban forms, published in 2008.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Parametric Design & Computation
    The application of various parametric design techniques including digital modeling, non-linear thinking, and generative form seeking. Building is constructed as an information model containing a large quantity of parameters which can be manipulated in various design phases.
    Digital Fabrication
    The integration of digital fabrication tools, such as laser cutter, 3D printer, and CNC milling, into the parametric design pipeline. Advanced procedural modeling and scripting across various computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software.
    Performance Driven Design
    The simulation and analysis of building performance in the relation to the environmental, structural, and social parameters.  Topics include form validation, genetic evolution based form seeking and design optimization methods.
    Real-time Visualization & Virtual Reality
    Explores the interactive virtual reality (VR) system, and real time rendering as new approaches for architectural visualization.
    Geography Information System (GIS) & Urban Simulation
    Explores various approaches to use GIS data to study behavioral, social, economic and geospatial information and their relationships to the 3D urban form.
    3D Programming & Algorithm form
    Explores various algorithms in the digital computing, with the emphasis on their potentials on the generation of novel and original forms.
    Sustainable Urbanism in the Global Perspective
    Research on various urban design issues during the rapid urbanization in China. Multi-disciplinary research with architecture, urban design, city planning and environmental engineering.
