Sally Anne Henrie

Biography

Sally Henrie graduated from the University of Arizona and began working as a Jr. Research Chemist for Phelps Dodge Corporation in Morenci, AZ.  Later she worked as a Plant Chemist for Mt. Pleasant Chemical Company in Mt. Pleasant, TN and then as the Materials Laboratory Supervisor/Process Engineer for Whirlpool Corporation, LaVergne, TN Division.  While employed by industry, she was often involved in working on a variety of environmental improvement projects. This greatly influenced her later interest in green chemistry and teaching students about it.  She later obtained her PhD in Organic chemistry from South Dakota State University which was followed by her academic career at Union University.  She is currently a Professor of Chemistry at Union University, where she is actively involved in mentoring undergraduate research in green chemistry education and dendrimer chemistry.  The Green Chemistry Laboratory Manual for General Chemistry is the result of her mentoring undergraduate students in chemical education research.  Three of the students who worked on this manual, Kathleen Cooper, Kelsey Denny and Rachael Harris, are now high school teachers, while Samantha Howard and Patrick Jones and are attending medical school and optometry school, respectively.  Michael Jones recently graduated and Kelsie Wood is currently attending Union University.  Sally Henrie has taught a variety of courses including Organic Chemistry, Organic / Inorganic Synthesis, Environmental Chemistry, Fundamentals of Chemistry, General and Analytical Chemistry labs, Survey of Chemical Instrumentation, Advanced Organic Chemistry and Physical Science.  She is a member of the American Chemical Society and has given many presentations and workshops on using green chemistry laboratory experiments she and her undergraduate research students have developed.  She has participated in and organized many endeavors focused on exciting elementary, middle and high school students about chemistry and science in general.  She and her husband live on a small farm.  They are active members in their church and community and enjoy spending time with their daughter’s and son’s families - especially their six grandchildren.
